*01 Wait A Minute!

Somewhere along the line I've been seriously misled.

I thought by the time I reached this age that I would be sitting on a
mountaintop in a Yoga position with people coming from all over to
listen to my answers to the mysteries of life.

Or, in lieu of that, I would at least be on a yacht somewhere avoiding
all of those people like a plague. Instead of having doting admirers,
sometimes when I give advice, I'm looked at like I don't know "Sic-em!"
from "Get off!"

Furthermore, I've always heard that you can't teach old dogs new tricks,
but someone fools me with a new trick all the time.

What happened to the infallibility of time-tested adages? Now I'm not
talking about old wives' tales like you can't eat medium-rare pork or
drink milk when eating fish or an hour before you go swimming. I'm
talking about ones like, "My word is my bond." and "Absence makes the
heart grow fonder." or "A clear conscience is more valuable than
wealth." What about "A penny saved is a penny earned." That's about as
useless as the penny.

One of the things I've learned in all my acquired wisdom is that are
certain people out there that are dedicated to proving some of these
sayings wrong. As an example, "You can't get blood from a turnip." Tell
that to an IRS agent and you will get laughed at in your face. Other
sayings are pretty true, but not in the way they were intended, like,
"Charity begins at home." My wife has that on her credit cards. And
others seem to be less true as every year goes by, such as "What doesn't
kill us, makes us stronger." If that were the case I'd be Superman.

I guess that there are some true old wise sayings, but they all seem
negative, if one thinks about it. Among these are some that I have found
to be pretty true:

A drowning man will clutch at a straw. - Sir Thomas More
A fool and his money are quickly parted. - J. Bridges (1587)
Be careful what you wish for, for you may just get it.
Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see.
Just because something is common sense doesn't mean it's common
practice.

Oh, well. Maybe I'll just try to stay with a comment that seems to have
worked a lot, even though contrary to wise advise.

"Anything worth doing is worth overdoing."

*02 Browser Patches

Over the last few months I have helped several customers with computers
that have been comprised with spyware and/or viruses. Twice in the last
three weeks, I had individuals type a domain name in their address bar
only to be send to some obscure search engine, all the while complaining
about how slow their computer was working. We even had one of our
machines (one our temps use) infected with browser high-jacking spyware.
This spyware was inserted with a toolbar for Explorer that someone
installed on the machine. It's really getting hard to keep your computer
current and working smoothly.

This week both Explorer and Firefox users were encouraged to install
patches to their browsers to fix security flaws.

Microsoft released three software updates that mend critical security
flaws. Microsoft rates all three of the patches as "critical updates"!
These updates concern current versions of Windows and Explorer as well
as older versions of Word. The Explorer and Windows patches are the most
significant, because they could both be used to take control of a user's
computer with a properly encoded Web page. The flaw in Word, could allow
a hacker to gain control of a user's system when a maliciously encoded
Word document is opened. This defect doesn't effect the most recent
versions of the word program.

You can update your Windows software by clicking "Start", then "Windows
Update"

The Mozilla Foundation fixed a number of security problems in its
Firefox Web browser with the release of 1.0.5. According to the
Mozilla Foundation, "they are generally not considered to be critical".

Nevertheless, they advise that all users upgrade to the new version,
which also includes "stability" improvements.

You can download the new version at:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

With all these continuous attacks on our computers and our privacy, it's
more important that ever to keep your software patched. Take a few
minutes and update your browser.
