Newsletter ArchiveSUBJECT:Evidently, I'm not "P.C." - Toolbars and Freeware The Internet 800 Directory - http://www.inter800.com The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter This issue is for Friday, June 03, 2005 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Table of Contents 01. Evidently, I'm not "P.C." 02. Toolbars and Freeware 03. Tip Of The Week --------------------------------------------------------------------- *01 Evidently, I'm not "P.C." I wrote what I thought was a very funny little piece about how I attract certain types of people that may not be the most desirable in one's image of themselves. Unfortunately, I gave it to my wife to proof, and she will not allow me to publish it in this newsletter. Not only does she believe it to be offensive to a substantial number of the population, she e-mailed me that it was also "certainly not p.c." I had to ask her what "p.c." meant. When she replied "politically correct", I realized that she was exactly right, especially since I don't even know the definition of that term either, much less the initials. I suppose that I'm not p.c. because I do have my biases. For example, I can't stand liars, cheats and thieves. But I would rather be held up by gunpoint than be robbed by someone that rationalizes his actions when doing something or someone wrong. I guess also on that list would be mooches, hypocrites and mosquitoes. I'm also not particularly fond of guys that are so good-looking that you want to hit them with an ugly stick. Now I know that, at my age, and with my looks, I shouldn't throw rocks. Although I was good-looking enough to marry a beautiful woman, after I got used to her tapping the furniture with that little white cane. However, I'm not inclined to give up my prejudices in these areas. I just won't send them in writing to be proofed. His concern was how fast they can swamp your machine with spyware and pop-ups. There are very good freeware programs that perform their tasks as well or better than any program you could buy. I’ve been using freeware programs for years without a problem. But, unfortunately, Ken’s right, many attractive "freeware" programs have installed in them small applications that transmit information from your computer back to the software's author. Some continue to do so even after you have uninstalled the program. The hidden program (spyware) collects information that can be sold to marketing or other companies. Many of these spyware applications interfere with the operation of your computer, causing slow performance or sometimes even the “Blue Screen Of Death”. When I switched to Firefox, I quit using a toolbar with my browser. However, when I was using Explorer, the Google toolbar was a must. It made searching Google easy and killed pop-ups. It was a very useful tool for my browser. When I did a little searching on toolbars, I found a site that cataloged toolbars. This site had cataloged over 500 toolbars, according to them, 43% of the toolbars had spyware built into them. When you download any software or tools, you should read the licensing agreement before installing it on your machine. Before providing information to any service or site, it might be a good idea to review the sites “Privacy Policy” and/or “Terms of Service”. There are many groups of people that pool their talents to create great open source software. Nevertheless, there are others looking to use any means to turn a buck. Just be careful! If you get hit with a pop-up or a program opens a window you want closed, do this. Hold down the "Alt" key on your keyboard and press the "F4" key. This will close the top window.
