My Wife's Dad 02. Internet News 03. Tip Of The Week --------------------------------------------------------------------- *01 My Wife's Dad My wife's Dad died about 10 days ago. I'm not writing this to evoke any empathy, but just to record what I have just suddenly realized. Bob R. Blair was a tremendously good man. I will not list all of his accomplishments line item by line item, as the several hundreds of people who showed up at the visitation and funeral can document. What I want to comment upon is how people affect one another, even when one doesn't recognize it. You see, I was there at Bob's stroke, and through the subsequent days in the hospital. Yet, I never cried, nor did I feel any strong emotion, other than my feelings for his wife, my wife and his other daughters and relatives. Mr. Blair had not just been a father-in-law, but he had been an investor in my ventures, was on the board of DIANCO, and, more importantly, was my friend. We both looked forward to each other's company. Since my Dad died last year, I felt the same feelings about him as I did about Bob. Why didn't I even cry then? Two of the best people I've even had the experience of knowing died in front of me and I feel nothing? But do you know what happened? The priest at St. Pius Church in Pasadena announced that he had realized that he had just screwed up. A voice (God's - why not?) had just told him that this was not about Bob, but about Betty, his wife of 58 years. It was actually, he said, about both Bob and Betty, and their wonderful love affair. It was exactly the same with my father and mother. I lost it then, and cried. Whether you believe in God or not, if you don't have the emotion of love, then you are lost. Actually, I felt something all along. I felt like they never left. They're just in a different realm, trying to figure out why I'm messing up so much. They left me with good instructions, which I can heed or ignore. It's my choice - as they would have both told me. They were both exemplary people in all ways. I can't even list all their attributes. I think I'll try to take their advice. Today, I suddenly feel their presence again. God and his Angels, please help me. There are 2 new good guys up there. They earned their wings. Steven A. One of the biggest is in how I find information. When I need to know something, I "Google It"! This means not just basic information, but news as well. This has made the Internet my major source of news. Don't get me wrong, I still read the local paper. However, our local paper is just that local. Using the Internet as your main news source is a growing trend. According to recent study by JupiterResearch, the number of online adults who prefer the Internet as their main source of news has grown by over 35 percent in the last four years. These numbers really don't surprise me. Internet news is timelier and more comprehensive with as many different viewpoints as you care to read. Because I use the Internet for my news, my national and worldviews have changed significantly in the last few years. Will this growing number of people using the Internet for news experience this same change? Some news web sites use feeds (RSS feeds) to quickly publish the latest headlines. If you are using Firefox as your browser, try using "live bookmark". This is a special type of bookmark that acts as a folder to contain the links in a feed. You can create a live bookmark by visiting a site with a feed, clicking on the live bookmark icon in the Status Bar, and selecting the feed format. If you are still using Explorer, you might think about trying Firefox or Google for "RSS readers". You will find several programs that you can use to read the RSS feeds. One way to reduce the number of returns is to remove people or things you don't want to see. To remove a word from the search results, just enter a minus sign (-) before the word to be blocked from your Google News return. Another way limit the search is to require that a word or name be in the article. To require a word be in the search results, just enter a plus sign (+) before the word that's forced into your Google News return.
