*01 Explorer Attacked

For several months now I have been touting Foxfire as my browser of
choice. I'm not that big a fan of Microsoft, but if they have the best
product I'll use it. When Explorer came out I switched from Netscape.
The features in Explorer were better and it was free (at that time
Netscape was $30). Later when Microsoft made Explorer part of Windows
98, Netscape was dead as the prevalent browser. In an effort to keep
everyone using Explorer, Microsoft started adding extra features for web
designers, features that only work with Explorer. It's some of these
features that are now under attack, allowing websites to stealthily
place spyware programs on your machine.

Last week security researchers informed us of a new security threat.
This new spyware threat appears to spread through pop-up ads and is
designed to capture personal data. The Trojan horse file poses as an
image file named "img1big.gif" but is actually an executable file that
installs a malicious add-on to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.
The add-on, known as a BHO (Browser Helper Object), then monitors for
and records outbound data to the Web sites of several dozen financial
institutions.

Two weeks ago security researchers warned surfers that online organized
crime groups are breaking into Web servers and seeding the Web sites
with malicious code that takes advantage of two flaws in Internet
Explorer that Microsoft has not yet fixed. The inserted code redirects
you to another server in Russia. That server uses the pair of Explorer
vulnerabilities to upload and execute a remote access Trojan horse to
the victim's computer. The software records the victim's keystrokes and
opens a back door in the computer to allow the attacker to access the
computer. According to the report the infected sites weren't out of the
way unvisited sites but major companies, including some banks.

Because Foxfire is not vulnerable to these attacks and in my experience
a better browser, maybe it's time you give Foxfire, which is free, an
evaluation for a couple of weeks. It's my belief that you'll wish you
had switched sooner.

*02 If I had a nickel….

"If I had a nickel, you know what I would do?
I'd spend it all on candy and give it all to you.
"Cause that's how much I love you, baby.
That's how much I love you."

That's the first chorus of a song my father would sing to me, as a
child. There are a lot of verses that I can't even remember, but they
all meant the same thing. Another was,
"If you were a horsefly, and I an old gray mare,
I'd sit and let you bite me, and never move a hair.
Cause …"

I don't remember who recorded it and I'm not even going to look it up on
the Internet, because I like remembering it just the way my Dad sang it.
It's not just the song and the memory, but it's also the meaning. It's a
silly song, but the meaning is serious. I would suggest that you sing a
verse out loud to anyone that you can.

Without being maudlin, these simple verses imply that, no matter what we
do in life, and no matter what religion of God in which we believe (or
don't), we are just here for a very short time, and whom we love is who
we are.

It's not just what we eat.

Tip of the Week

If you are trying Firefox, then you need to review the extensions.
Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox.
They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature.

Visit:

One of my favorites is Single Window 1.0 it really makes the tab feature
more enjoyable.
