*01 Getting News With RSS

Over the last few years, the Internet has become my main source for
News. Don't get me wrong, I still read my local newspaper, but most
non-local stories of any importance, I already know about by the time my
paper is delivered. The instant flow of information is one of the many
advantages the Internet brings to our computers.

The biggest problem with finding news online is the number of places you
can go to find and read stories. You have so many options: sites like;
BBC, CNET, CNN, New York Times, Forbes, Wired, Salon, and Yahoo. As a
matter of fact, I have several hundred news sites bookmarked in my
browser. You just don't have the time to visit all these sites looking
for stories that are of interest to you.

This is where RSS becomes very useful. Really Simple Syndication (RSS)
is a XML format designed for sharing headlines and other Web content.
Using an RSS Reader you can very quickly scan and update the headlines
of different sites. This makes finding and the stories that are of
importance to you very quick and easy.

There are many programs currently available that can read RSS, and if
you do a search for "RSS Readers" in Google, you can find one that
should work for you. If you are using Mozilla's "FireFox"
(http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) in the "Extensions" area you
will find two extensions that can add the ability to read RSS to your
browser.

Enjoy!

*02 PHILOSOPHY - DOES IT EXIST ANYMORE?

During the period ranging from about 460 BC - 323 BC, "philosophy" was
ranked as one of the foremost forms of intellectual enterprise. It was
one of the highest and purest "sciences" to which the Greek and other
educated cultures honored. However, it suddenly almost disappeared for
almost 1000 years. (Note: This does not take into account the Eastern
or Asian philosophies.)

But, think about it - everything that you may have studied in school -
ranging from Socrates to Plato to Aristotle as great philosophers,
lasted only about 75 to 100 years.

Then, it was suddenly revived in modern day terms, in places like
Britain, Germany, France, etc. with Francis Bacon in the 1500s, to
Spinoza to Voltaire to Kant to Nietzsche to Santanya, etc.

Then it has suddenly disappeared, again.

Lack of money may be one reason. I looked up philosophy and
philosophers in my local Yellow Pages and couldn't even find a heading,
much less a listing.

However, what the ancient ones thought and taught about is invaluable,
and the overall basic premises that these ancients taught as are ones
with which we must deal every day, whether we recognize it or not. They
are five original fields of study: logic, esthetics, ethics, politics
and metaphysics. (Note: These do not include "science which can imply
knowledge, but not necessarily wisdom - "Will Durant - The Story of
Philosophy.)

What has drawn me to this topic is how modern people refer to people as
"philosophers", because they toss about lofty quotes regarding life and
its meanings, without relevance to the real world, and of things that we
don't think about. Actually, philosophers were thinkers attaching their
thoughts to the real world and attempting to achieve some sort of
understanding, if not conclusion, about each of these matters.

Each of the five fields of studies about must be addressed in everyday
matters in order for our lives to be relevant to our existence and
purpose in society. Philosophy then becomes a "social science", not yet
created in the brain, but rather rarely rendered into practice; but it
is one that should be practiced.

So what's your philosophy?

Tip of the Week

Last week we did a tip on capturing your screen, using the "print
Screen" (PrtScrn) key. Paul Wyman sent in a useful addition to that tip.
By using ALT-PrtScrn you can capture only the active window. Thanks Paul

Word Tip

Word remembers the last files you were working on. When you want to
re-open a recent document, you don't have to look for it, just slide
down the list and select the file. By default Word lists the last four
documents you've worked on at the bottom of the file menu. However you
can tell Word to store up to nine files if you want to.

Click "Tools"
Click "Options"
Select the "General" tab
Change the number in "Recently used file list"
