*01. Do We Need New Spam Laws?

If you have an e-mail address and have used it to communicate, you get
Spam. The longer you have it and the more you use it, the more Spam gets
sent to you. This is a problem crying out for an answer: however, my
experiences in the last few weeks have caused to me to ask the question:
Do we need new Spam laws?

Passing new laws that seem to protect us always gives politicians good
press and a chance to crow about how they helped us. However the reality
is they can't enforce the rules that are now in place. The Internet is
the new frontier; it's a wild western town without a Sheriff. For those
of you that think I'm exaggerating the problem, let me use this crisis
as an example. Over the last six months four major web sites that
provide spam-blocking lists have shut down as a result of crippling
Internet attacks. These sites are being attacked by denial-of-service
attacks (compromised computers are used to send so much traffic to a Web
site that it is temporarily taken down). They are also being spoofed in
the headers of Spam so that it appears that the Spam is coming from
them. These attacks are a tremendous drain on their resources, sustained
until they are forced to shut down.

What is happening to these web sites is criminal. But the real tragedy
is what happens when you try to report these types of problems. If the
authorities call you back, you must be able to document a big enough
loss or they won't even take your information. We have an environment
where people are performing criminal acts without fear, because they
know nobody is there to stop them. So again I ask the question. Do we
need new Spam laws or just a Sheriff to enforce the current laws?

*02 I Adore People

I Adore People That Act in Good Faith.
I Abhor People That Don't.

The title of this piece should be "Nuff Said", by definition. But it
isn't, because so many people don't get it.

Now don't stop here, because this is not a religious sermon. Nor is it
a position whereby I'm looking down my fairly substantial nose at
someone. It's almost just a matter of common sense and social
interaction.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is about morality and good faith,
which everyone can argue and redefine, except that "How can you justify
or rationalize screwing anyone?" (For the lack or a more political
term.)

I know that within my business career that I have made deals in good
faith with people who wanted nothing more than to take advantage of my
good faith. My naiveté not only shocked me then, when I realized they
were insincere, I hope it still will in the future. Because, you see, I
still believe that, "Right will out." I still believe that I can go to
a table and negotiate a deal where both sides win. I certainly want
that to happen. It not only makes one feel better, it's the right thing
to do.

Is that morality in any culture? Well, I hope so.
