*01 Wayback Machine

Welcome to the Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. This week I want to make you aware of a site that I think you will find very helpful. Most of us have been using the Internet for several years now and it has become a valuable source of information. Unlike books, the Internet can and does change. Sometimes pages or entire sites containing this useful information have been deleted from the Internet. Nothing is worse than clicking on a bookmark and getting that dreaded “404 - page not found”.

This is exactly were the Wayback Machine can help. Several years ago, The Internet Archive, working with Alexa Internet, created the Wayback Machine. The Wayback Machine makes it possible to search more than 10 billion pages stored in the Internet Archive's web archive. This is the elephant’s graveyard for web pages; you can find deleted pages or go back in Internet time and see sites as they were years ago.

First visit: http://www.archive.org Next type in (or paste) the url of the missing or changed web page. Then click “Take Me Back”

Try it with http://inter800.com and you can see how our site looked back in 1996.

One last tip, if you are reading a page that has a broken link and want to see that page, right click on the link, and then click (with explorer – “Copy Shortcut”) (with Netscape –“Copy Link Location”. Go to http://www.archive.org and paste (Ctrl-V) the link into the form. Hit the button and you should be looking at the lost page.

Please everyone have a happy and safe 4th of July.

Lamp-Fashions

We want to mention one of our long-time customers, Lamp-Fashions. Rudy has "The Home of the Life-time Warrant on Tiffany Lamps", which is pretty incredible.

He sells high quality table lamps, desk lamps, floor lamps, hanging Tiffany Lamps and reproductions and much more.

Visit his online show room at http://www.lamp-fashions.com/ or give him a call at 800-794-5830. He's great to chat with.
*02 Gullibility or Greed?

I am continuously amazed at the ongoing presence of the so-called Nigerian hoax and the Netherlands lottery scam. They generally begin with URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL ´I am the son of Lt.Col. M. Dange ( rtd) the former Military Administrator of Anambra State of Nigeria (or South Africa, etc).", or the wife or the attorney or accountant for some huge sum of money that was confiscated, misappropriated or just plain stolen. They always have access to it, but for various reasons can't access it, such as they are a civil servant and aren't allowed to do so. Some of them are actually creative, with the Netherlands lottery even posting a seemingly credible web site with references. However, if you will just help them by supplying a bank account, or in the case of the lottery fraud, just sending them upfront administrative fees, then they will promptly deposit 10% of $20 million as your share.

They generally also attempt to appeal to you as a reliable and trustworthy foreign partner. Where did they get that information, from the International Who's Who of Dupes?

As bizarre and outrageous as this may sound, millions of dollars have been successfully stolen by these scams and from some otherwise, normally intelligent people. Thence, the question proposed in the title above.

Chuck has a unique slant on this in that he says that, even if the stories were true, that the people who contributed to such a scheme are also acting illegally and deserve to lose their money.

Obviously, these types of scams are not limited to the Internet, as the Attorney General's office here busts several pyramid schemes a year. It just seems that the abundance and persistence of the exotic foreign ones only are rivaled by Viagra ads. Which brings to mind yet another preponderance: Is the sexual drive more powerful than greed?

Google Toolbar 2.0 Beta

When I’m looking for general information on the Internet, the search engine I use is Google. The folks at Google have made available a free tool bar that makes searching their data quick and easy. It also has a feature that blocks popups or allows them with the click of a button. This is only for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP/2000 users. You will find the Freeware at http://toolbar.google.com/index-beta.php

This is a Beta and can still have some bugs in it, so if you prefer to use the current non-beta version without popup blocker, go to: http://toolbar.google.com/
