An episode of “he said, she said” made a direct assault on some of the freedoms we hold most dear in this country. On May 6, Circuit Judge Diana Lewis without notice or any hearing, ordered Tucker Max (http://tuckermax.com) from ``disclosing any stories, facts or information, notwithstanding its truth, about any intimate or sexual act'' involving Katy Johnson (http://www.katyjohnson.com/). Her ruling has alarmed experts in First Amendment law, who say that such orders prohibiting future publication, prior restraints, are essentially unknown in American law.

Could this Jerry Springer style story of Tucker Max (author of “The Definitive Book of Pick-Up Lines) and Katy Johnson, (founder of Say Nay Today and the Sobriety Society) impact our free speech? Only in America could an issue like this test 200 years of hard won freedoms.

*02 Eating Vegetables in the Garden

I know that ya'll are probably tired of hearing that I grew up in West Texas, but bear with me. There's a parallel here somewhere even if you were born in Albany, New York. It may be stretch, I'll admit, but there is a connection.

Since my dad was a hired hand on a farm, until I was in the first grade, we raised alfalfa, wheat, cattle, chickens, hogs and dust. We were very successful in dust. It just seems to come naturally. We also raised a garden full of tomatoes, squash, corn and green onions.

One of my fondest memories is sitting in the garden, with a hose from the well, next to my German Shepherd/Collie mutt named "Ring" because of the white collar around his black neck. We would wash off those vegetables, shaking salt on them, and chomping down for lunch with the dry, hot wind blowing through my cotton-topped hair and my beautiful mother, in her apron, laughing at something my dad had said.

Whenever I see little kids eschew (if that is strong enough a word) their vegetables, I always think, "Boy, I wish I could eat those again with my Papa in that garden." I'd even eat the dust.

I'll bet money that there is not a human being out there reading this that doesn't have on of those core memories in his or her psyche. They may not involve their parents, or even their friends, but they're there. Even if you're dead broke or dying of cancer or in some other almost unbearable situation, you have something that keeps you going. It may be religion or your spouse or your kids or your friends or your so-called dedication to your job, but there is still that one memory that clings to you no matter how you want to shake it off. Sort of like cling-wrap, or the plastic that comes off a pack of cigarettes, (my personal favorite).

Now where is this going? Well, when a potential customer is rude, or gruff or refuses to return a call, which tends to imply that they are more important than me, I have to reach back into some pleasant experience.

I just got not just one, not just 2, but 3 responses in the same day from customers who thanked me for the exceptional personal customer service that I gave them just because I called them and explained what we were all about.

You know what? Only the guy from Albany, New York is paying me. But I bet he had some sort of garden, even in his mind, somewhere. And I bet he calls his customers and tells them how glad he is, that they are customers. Customer service is just a short step away from what we remember as a very pleasant experience. So is just talking to people.

Happy Father's Day.

Tip of the Week

Stopping Unwanted Program Start Up

Some programmers believe that you use their software every time you sit down at your computer. This overblown belief of importance sometimes causes them to auto-start their program when you boot your machine. So after installing several programs, your machine takes longer to boot and is working slower. All this, because you have auto-started several programs you are not using and they are using up your resources. Look at the icons next to your clock, these all represent programs currently running in the background on your machine.

To stop these programs from starting when you boot your machine, follow these steps.

1-Click the “Start” button
2-Click “Run”
3-Type in: msconfig
4-Click “OK”
5-In “System Configuration Utility” click the “Startup” tab
6-Uncheck the programs you don't want to start

Please note, if you're not sure about the program you're stopping, they are probably best left alone. Some things like "Scan Registry" and "System tray" need to be started.
