Tip Of The Week *01 Beware Patch Warning Welcome to the Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. Over the last couple of weeks some of our readers have fallen prey to a fake security warning with a virus attached instead of a patch. This virus creator is using the trust people feel for Microsoft as tool to infect them. Microsoft has never sent me an update or patch for any of their software. They will, if you request it, send you newsletters and updates on their products. However any patches will always be downloaded from their site. Here is what the message looks like: Subject: Taste the security pack from M$ Corporation. --------Message Content--------

Is this my epithet to an epigram using an empathetic, but none-the-less, emphatic epigram? Or, did I just mix up some words? The art of successful communication is truly an art. People who do it well, whether verbally or in written form, are generally more successful and well thought of than those who do not. People that do it badly are generally perceived as not being the sharpest tool in the shed, regardless of their intelligence (you will please note that I did not use irregardless, which is not a standard word, but which Word finds totally acceptable and which has now found its way into the English language because it is used, or misused, so often.) Two great examples come from my wife's past, and they illustrate the type of people with whom she used to hang: One of her old friends invited another to a party, adding, "Please come, if it's congenital to your plans." Whereupon the recipient of this invitation later told his wife, " We have a standing ovation to go." However, one does not have to use high-dollar words, such as commonly used by William Buckley, Jr., but they should always be straight forward and to the point. One should also know the definition and the spelling of the words one uses to keep from appearing to be an un- pedantic idiot. (Is un-pedantic a word? Pedantic definitely is.) One of my pet peeves in the English language is the misuse of the verbs "imply" and "infer". They are more commonly reversed than properly used. It is my inference that someone has missed his implication when he says that in reverse. I would suggest that looking up a word in a dictionary is far better than misunderstanding its use. As flawed as Spell-check is in Word, it's still better than mispelling misspelling. (Although, I have a hilarious compilation of what Word has suggested to me, which I will share with you in another article.) Let me just end with saying that the better one communicates with others, on any basis, the more effective and successful one becomes.
