*01 Password Precautions

Welcome to the Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. Last week a new virus started infecting people who still haven’t updated their Outlook software. It’s called LoveGate and it spreads via shared network files as well as by sending copies of itself via e-mail. LoveGate also contains a backdoor that allows remote users to have access to the infected PC. If you have updated your software and don’t open unsolicited attachments, this is not a virus you need to worry about.

However there was one aspect of this virus that caught my attention. When spreading on local networks it tries to break in by using 16 different passwords. After reading this I scoured the net in search of these 16 passwords, because these 16 passwords must be the first passwords any hacker would use when attempting to break into a system, making this a perfect list of faulty passwords.

The 16 passwords that LoveGate uses to spread on networks:

Many years ago I would remember all of my most frequently called phone numbers. Now those numbers are saved in my cell phone. That unused mental capacity is now taken up with passwords. My current existence is filled with pin numbers, voice mail passwords and you can’t forget the numerous passwords required when using the computer. If you use any of the easy to remember passwords listed above, you don’t have any security.

How do you remember all those passwords and still keep some security? This is what I do: first pick a key word or set of numbers that you won’ t forget. We will call this your base. It’s best if the base word is five to six characters in length. Don’t use your first or last name. Do use something that’s easy for you to remember. If your base is letters, add numbers to the beginning or the end of the base. Example: (12base or 1base1 or base12) If you use numbers for your base then add letters to the beginning or the end. This will create an easy to remember, hard to crack passwords.

*02 A Few Of My Favorite Things…

We have several catalog companies who advertise with us and I have been an interested observer and user of mail-order catalogs for years. Although, I never order anything by mail, I just dial the toll free number. At any rate, through the years I've seen some incredible stuff sold through catalogs. Here are a few of my favorites:

Sterilized 1005 Natural Beef Bones for Dogs - Now these are stuck on a page surrounded by products such as "dried Pig Ears for chewing enjoyment", "two treats in one - a tasty filling in a hard crunchy hoove (sic)" (which you can order filled with either beef, cheese, or peanut butter!)", and other all natural treats freeze-dried and made from liver, chicken and lamb. They even have "A tasty and healthy alternative to ice cream". What dog doesn't need a break from the day-to-day ice cream treat? Also, what self-respecting dog would want his bones sterilized? Actually, why would anyone buy a sterilized food for an animal that eats grass, bugs, cats and licks himself?

Rooster Soap Dispenser - It's "really something to crow about!" Every time you press the pump you'll hear cock-a-doodle doo! This one is so silly I might buy it.

In-egg Scrambler - "As seen on TV!" You simply punch your raw egg on the needle, turn the gadget on and it scrambles the egg in the shell. Amazing. Perfect for those really lazy people or anyone that wants an all-yellow hard-boiled egg. (Ever see a solid yellow egg?)

Automatic Windshield Wiper - Version 2

Now I'm not talking about the intermittent wipers that the guy invented and had to sue GM, etc., during which time, he lost his fortune and his wife and kids 20 years later. (He won a lot of money, but at what price?) I'm talking about the kind that one sets so that when it rains, ones' wipers sense that there is rain and then they turn themselves on at a rate that they, and only they, perceive. (As if one can refer to an inanimate object as a "they".)

One of our board members, and one of my closest friends, bought another of his long lines of Lincolns, ranging from Mark 1 (if there is such a thing) to today. To be fair, he also owned various Cadillacs, Corvettes and other machines that were designed to deter his middle-age process, which I am glad to report, that has abated, primarily due to old age.

At any rate, my wife and I were aboard this vehicle when he told us of this attribute. My wife, whom actually has a college degree, asked, "Is that designed for people who don't know when it's raining?"

Perhaps… as we now own a Lincoln. The gadget still drives me nuts, as it perceives a mist as a deluge and vice-versa.

The point of all of this? As 'Ol Abe implied, "You can sell some of the people all of the time……"

I could go on and on, but I need to go to work, so please let us know of a few of your favorite things, and we might share them with others. Also, one of our partners, WorldPages.com, happens to have a loony named Dick Larkin, who writes an incredible newsletter, which is actually funny and wise at the same time. Tip of the Week

Table tip

Although I like tables in a presentation, I dislike working with them. Here are a couple of tips I've found useful.

To delete a table, select and highlight it then press "Backspace". Although this would seem obvious, doing the same with "Delete" doesn't work.

Another method: Hold down the [Alt] key, and then double-click on the table.

There are at least 5 more methods, but they are tedious and these are easy.
