Tip Of The Week *01 Common Sense Cybersecurity Back in September, I did an article about our new “National Strategy To Secure Cyberspace”. One of the keys to this plan was the education of individual users. The Electronic Industries Alliance, a group backed by the Federal Trade Commission and a number of corporate sponsors, have taken steps to start the educational process. They have produced the “Common Sense Guide for Home and Individual Users” This guide has the support of government agencies and industry leaders. Their goal is to focus on education instead of legislation in promoting cybersecurity. One of the main points in the “National Strategy To Secure Cyberspace” is to help Internet users protect themselves. Here is a list of their nine basic actions to better secure your computer: Action 1: Install and Use Anti-Virus Programs Action 2: Keep Your System Patched Action 3: Use Care When Reading Email with Attachments Action 4: Install and Use a Firewall Program Action 5: Make Backups of Important Files and Folders Action 6: Use Strong Passwords Action 7: Use Care When Downloading and Installing Programs More Advanced Action 8: Install and Use a Hardware Firewall Action 9: Install and Use a File Encryption Program and Access Controls You will find this 26-page guide to safe-computing strategies at: http://www.isalliance.org/resources/papers/ISAhomeuser.pdf If you have any thoughts or ideas you would like to share, please send them to Chuck Arning at chuck@inter800.com We’re Talkin’ Serious” Bone Suckin’ Sauce ! They were neighbors and, hopefully friends. They expected nothing in return except that you protect the neighborhood or needed help, you knew where to find them and they expected the same. I often think of those years in Amarillo because they instilled a sense of real community in me and I don't remember anyone there letting me down. They were all what we call "Good people." We were also instilled with common courtesy, such as returning phone calls, opening doors and saying hello to strangers. Nowadays I can call or email a corporate executive 10 times without a "Howdy-do?" or "No, thanks." This type of non-response to me generally indicates several things. (I will use "He" in place of the person for those gender sensitive.) 1-He believes he is more important then me. 2-He is irresponsible. How does he know why I'm even calling? Would he just return Ed McMahan's call? 3-His company has entered into a typical bureaucratic state, and therefore is not being run well (more on that next issue). 4-His company is losing business because of him. 5-He is just plain discourteous. I make a point of returning any and all business calls including salesmen - in fact, especially salesmen, because of courtesy and because it's good business, which includes PR. Its also simply courtesy. Steven Jackson - sjackson@inter800.com DEVRY UNIVERSITY – WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH? Provide for your family? Move out of that dead-end job? Make your family proud? Whether one is using Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape, it is very easy to revert back to pages that one has previously viewed during one session, without having to research for the URL or go to Bookmarks. While in the browser, on whatever page that you are viewing, simply look at the URL column at the top of your page, which is "Location" in Netscape and "Address" in Explorer. To the right is a downward arrow. Click on that arrow and it will show what pages were previously viewed. Click on what you want to go there again.
