*01 Internet Taxes

Online shoppers may get a tax break, as Christopher Cox (R-CA) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced legislation to extend indefinitely the ban of taxes on the Internet.

The current law, titled the Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA), was authored by Cox and Wyden and enacted back in 1998. This law prohibits taxes on Internet access; taxation by multiple states on products purchased over the Internet; and discriminatory taxes that treat Internet purchases differently from other types of sales. This law expired in October of 2001 and was extended till November 1, 2003 thru the Internet Tax Non-Discrimination Act.

The new version of the Internet Tax Non-Discrimination Act, introduced January 7 of this year, will permanently extend the existing moratorium on new taxes on the Internet.

Please take sometime and let your congressperson know how you feel on this subject.

*02 AOL Users Take Note

This week it was reported that a serious flaw in the company's Web-based mail system made it possible to gain users passwords.

The flaws allowed anyone to access an AOL e-mail account with only the account name and not the password. Then using the account name they would try logging on to AOL Instant Messenger. AOL Instant Messenger login window offers a link labeled "Forgot my password," which would e-mail the password to the open e-mail account.

This flaw left private communications open for public inspection and sensitive information such as passwords and account numbers exposed to hackers.

America Online plugged the hole on Wednesday of this week after being tipped off to the flaw.

Tip of the Week

Removing angle brackets from forwarded email messages

We all have received e-mail that’s been forwarded so many times that it's almost unreadable because of all the angle brackets (>), line breaks, and extra spaces.

You can clean up that e-mail message by using Word's or WordPad’s Find And Replace feature. To remove angle brackets (>) from email messages:

1- Copy the message.

2- Paste the message contents in a new Word or WordPad document.

3- Click “Edit” from the menu bar then “Replace”. (You can also press Ctrl+H )

4-Type the character you'd like removed- leave the Replace With text box blank.

5- Click “Replace All”.
