*01 Facing Forward

Now that the holidays are over, we must turn our attention to the coming year. The difference between where we are and where we want to be is what we do. This year it will be more important than ever for us to focus on the job at hand. With that in mind here are some tips for setting goals.

Anytime you have done something really worthwhile, you were knowingly or sometimes unknowingly following through on a goal. Goals can keep you focused on a purpose and help you through difficult times when many others would give up. By knowing exactly what you want to accomplish, you know what to focus on and what is merely a distraction.

Before you can achieve a worthwhile goal, you must build commitment. The first step to building commitment is to create a true desire to achieve the goal. Building goals around, “it would be nice” or “I might like to” will not work. Sit down and write out all the benefits and advantages of achieving your goal. Develop your desire by visualizing how you will feel and what your life will be like once you have accomplished your goal. Strong desire will create strong commitment.

The second step towards building commitment is investment; the more you think about and plan your goal the more you’ve invested. There will be a direct relationship between your level of investment and your commitment. Write your goal down. When setting goals, you should think about:
1-Is this goal in line with my basic values?
2-What will I have to give up or reduce?
3-What areas will need to be increased or will require more effort?
4-What unwanted behavior, feelings or thoughts will need to be changed?
5-What are realistic daily goals and are they in agreement with the long-term goal?
6-How fast can you sensibly make these changes?
7-What areas will you need help and where can you go to get it?

The last step to building commitment is ownership. Setting goals is the beginning of a self-change process and nothing is more personal. You can receive input from others but the goal must be yours and you must claim it as your own. Plan your activities and prioritize them. Set deadlines and build a system to measure your progress. Build a picture of the goal already complete. Play that picture over and over in your mind.

Little is achieved without commitment. Goals provide the map to take us where we want to go.

*02 Paid Search Listings

In the 12/31/02 issue of the Internet Advertising report, entitled "2002: Interactive Marketing Hits the Comeback Trail", it reported that, in the third quarter of 2002, that Internet advertising started an upswing for the first time in 2 years, since the dor.com debacle and the 9/11 tragedy. In fact, AOL is predicting a 22% growth this year and Overall, the "Online Publishers Association said its members increased ad revenues by an average of 23.8 percent in the first three quarters of the year."

While that is good news for all of us, more important is "How does one advertise on the internet?"

Well, the article gives us a real solution: ´Search is King - Leading the way for the industry's comeback was the strength of paid search listings. For the past year, paid search is expected to account for $301 million in revenues, according to eMarketer. That's a 144 percent increase from 2001."

Although we have said this before, we are going to repeat it here. The Internet 800 Directory has always had a model of paid search listings, and it works!

Our customers that have been with us for 3, 4, 5, or even 6 years really don't pay us just because we are good guys (which we believe that we are), but they pay us because it works.

If you have a web site, then you must be found, somehow. People that use the Internet today do not simply "surf" for the novelty that they did 5 years ago. They are looking for answers - to purchase or to inquire about goods, services and information, which is the way it was envisioned. How do they search? They simply type in the first words that come to their mind - KEY words. If you want these people to find you, your site and your toll free number so that they will call you and you can make a sale, then figure out what you would search for if you were looking for your products and services and use those key words.

Oh yeah. And use the Internet 800 Directory to get your key words and yourself in front of those people.

Entering tabs in a Word table

This one was sent to me and bears repeating.

When you create a table in Word, the [Tab] key takes on some special functions. First, pressing [Tab] when the insertion point is in the last table cell creates a new row. In addition, pressing [Tab] in any other cell moves the insertion point into the next cell. (You can press [Shift][Tab] to reverse direction.)

But what if you want to insert a tab mark within a table? The trick is to hold down the [Ctrl] key as you press [Tab]. Word then enters a tab mark just as if you'd pressed [Tab] outside the table.
