*01 E-commerce and Development Report

The United Nations last month released their E-commerce and Development Report for 2002. This new report shows that in spite of the worldwide economic slowdown and the failure of many Internet-based businesses, the global use of the Internet continues to expand. The report predicts that by the end of this year (2002) Internet users worldwide will be 655 million strong. Last years robust growth of 30% comes with one third of all new users in the developing world.

According to their report, strong growth of e-commerce continues in both the North American and Western European markets. In the United States, B2C (business-to-commerce)increased 19% in the first quarter of this year alone. Although this currently represents less the 3% of the total retail sales, some sectors (software, travel and music) online sales have already climbed to as much as 18% of their total sales.

In B2B (business-to-business)they report that online transactions are increasing quickly on both sides of the Atlantic. Currently less than 2% of all B2B is transacted online; they report this number could reach 20% of all transactions in the next two to four years. This would represent a massive shift of business operations towards the online environment.

At present growth rates, the report estimates that around 18 per cent of all purchasing by firms and individuals could be done over the Web by 2006.

*02 December 2002
Man, I hate this. It's the first week in December 2002 and I don't even remember where the first week in December 2001 went. In fact, did we just jump from 2000 to 2002? I still have an inventory of Millennium t-shirts and hats, with slogans like, "The End Is Not Coming - It's Here!"

I'm not quite sure what we have accomplished this year, outside of getting older and maybe learning a little more. Actually we have learned a lot. We learned that we can survive an economic and emotionally disturbing disaster. We learned that the US people can come together, not despite of their differences in race and occupation and looks, but because of them. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

From our online presence (and, therefore, our corporate) point-of-view, we've learned that media can take a blow and still survive, maybe even learn how to be better.

We've also learned that that business, like people, are subject to scrutiny, and that business, like people, must have a conscience - morally, politically and philosophically. Although, it seems that some of those guys lost that, just like I lost 2001, and most of 2002. Maybe they are hidden somewhere in our closets.

I know that this piece shouldn't be written until 12/02 is over, but I'm doing it now so that maybe some of us will remember the last part of this year, and maybe do something about it.

Now, for something totally different, two customers told me last week that they have seen their positioning improve in the search engines since they have advertised with us. That is not so strange. In fact, that's the way it should be. As our traffic increases, so does our Enhanced and Bold Listings, which reflects in page views and, therefore, "popularity", or whatever factors search engines and spiders like Google, Overture, etc. use. If you want to increase your traffic, call us.

Tip of the Week

Find a lost file quickly.

When you need a document or file and you just can’t remember where you placed then in your computer, don’t spend time looking from file to file. Just click on an empty spot on the Desktop, and then hit F3. The search box will appear, enter the name, select your main drive and hit “Find Now”.
