*01 Open Market for Toll-Free Numbers

Welcome to the “The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter”. This week we have an article sent to us by the 1-800 American Free Trade Association. Unlike your domain name, which you own, the toll free numbers that you are using DO NOT belong to you. The 1-800 American Free Trade Association is working to change this, enjoy the article.

-----Begin: Open Market for Toll-Free Numbers-----

Current FCC policy, by denying subscribers property rights to their toll-free numbers, precludes the development of an open market, inhibits competition, and deters investment in the development of brands based on vanity numbers. The toll-free industry must act now to persuade the FCC to repeal its prohibition on transfers of toll-free numbers because:

+ Current Commission policy constrains competition. Since 1997, companies have been unable to obtain Vanity 800 numbers since none are available from the 800 Database, and it is illegal to buy one.

+ A free market for toll-free numbers would foster economic growth by enabling businesses of all sizes access to an invaluable marketing tool. More small and mid-sized companies would be able to develop powerful brands such as 800-FLOWERSTM or 800-COLLECTTM

+ Restrictions on number transfers prevent negotiated settlements in which one party assigns the number in dispute to another, causing small businesses to suffer when faced with prohibitively expensive trademark litigation.

Companies interested in the development of a competitive marketplace in toll-free numbers, such as users and providers of toll-free services, call centers, and direct marketing firms, can join the effort by contacting 1-800 AFTA (American Free Trade Association). The organization's primary initial goal is lobbying the FCC to allow voluntary toll-free number transfers.

*02 As a Friend

I hope this doesn't sound like an essay I had to write in high school, but a friend that I see about once every two years called and asked to spend the night on his way from Dallas to Santa Fe. I've known this guy for over 30 years and I don't believe that I've ever not seen him smile or laugh. His laugh is sorta like a horse lapping water. Actually his face kind of looks like a horse. And, as my wife would say, he's beautiful. So is his wife.

He is one of those people that, if you were lucky enough to have one, would come to your aid if you called him in the middle of the night from a jail in Loveland, Colorado, and he would show up. And, as the real measure of friendship would have it, so would I, if it happened in reverse.

Our reunion, which lapsed into debauchery - as far as old guys go, was as is always, talks about what we did when, years ago. Back when we were more brilliant and had hair to lose.

Never mind the details of the revelry, it just was an instance by which I felt related to business that we ignore.

I have customers to whom I speak about once a year. I have never met them, in person. However, I feel that they are friends. Don't get me wrong, I probably can't call, say, Barbara from South Fork, ND and ask her to fly into Loveland and bail me out, but I can call her, and we lighten each others' day.

My aforementioned friend had a father that was the head of department of Psychology for over 20 years in a well-respected Texas university. Did that make him the most-rounded kid on the block? Well, I guess that you would have to ask him, but the answer is probably "No.". He had the same problems that a kid growing up on the streets of Happensack had.

The point? When one does business, it is part of one's life. It's how he brings home the bacon. If one's livelihood depends upon the reaction of another's, then why not make it pleasant and rewarding for both. After all, we all really have the same problems, with kids and school, filling up the gas tank, and deciding what to eat for supper - not to mention the creeps with whom we have to deal at work and the in-laws and the monsters in everyone's closet.

I know that this is hackneyed, but most expressions of this nature are, or they wouldn't have lasted this ling. Maybe, at least, we would all feel better by just dealing with another in the manner by which one would like to be treated - as a friend. As a friend we just haven't met, yet.

Tip of the Week

Several days ago I was working with a large contract and word crashed. Being focused on the changes I was making, I failed to save my work as I went. This tip really saved me some time.

To recover a document if Word crashes, do this:

-Open the “Tools” menu.

-Click “Options”.

-Click the “File Locations” tab.

-Go to the folder listed under “AutoRecover files” (if this space is blank your data is lost) and open the backup document.
