*01 Positioning on Google

Google has become one of the most used, therefore one of the most important, search engines on the Internet today. Getting good positioning on Google can be very tricky. According to Google’s web site this is how they establish positioning.

----Quote From Google’s Site----
“Google runs on a unique combination of advanced hardware and software. The heart of our software is PageRank™, a system for ranking web pages developed by our founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. And while we have dozens of engineers working to improve every aspect of Google on a daily basis, PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of our web search tools. “

So what is PageRank?

PageRank is how Google measures a page's importance.

When you search Google, first they find all pages matching the keywords of your search. Then they rank them using factors in the pages, like keywords. Next they calculate in the inbound anchor text (this is the one that creates those embarrassing returns for some sites). Now that they have all the returns, Google uses PageRank to arrange these results. PageRank is the way Google establishes the order of the returns.

How does PageRank work?

Google uses the theory that if site 1 links to site 2, that means site 1 is saying that site 2 is a significant site. The actual text in the link is not important. If a page has important links to it then its links to other pages also become more important. So, PageRank is a number that is assessed solely on the voting ability of all incoming links to a site. Every unique page of a site that is indexed in Google has a PageRank. If you want to find out your PageRank, you will need to install the Google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com ) for Internet Explorer. On the Google toolbar there is bar graph named PageRank, hold your mouse over the graph and you will see a score that is from zero to ten. This is your PageRank.

If you would like to learn more about how PageRank calculates its score, you will find a detailed article at (http://webworkshop.net/pagerank.html) that should be helpful.

Tip of the Week

If you are traveling with a laptop, sometimes airport security will ask you to boot your computer, so they can verify it’s a working machine. You can save time at security checkpoints by using one of these two tricks.

1-Put your laptop in suspend (or sleep) mode before arriving at the airport, then your computer will start instantly.

2-Format a boot disc for your laptop and place it in the floppy drive, then if asked, the floppy will boot without Windows, saving you time.
