Tip Of The Week *01 Strategy to Secure Cyberspace According to the General Accounting Office “a national cybersecurity plan is becoming increasingly important as the possibility of an attack on the nation's critical infrastructure increases.” The Bush Administration has made public its draft of “National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace”. The draft plan describes the challenges of protecting critical infrastructures, such as financial trading networks and power grids, from cyberattack. It also recommends actions to achieve this goal to a large group of people, from home PC users to other nations. For the next 60 days the public can review and offer comments on the plan. This feedback is to come from e-mail and eight planned town-hall meetings. This plan will affect you! Please, take a few minutes and read it. You will find the report at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/pcipb/ If you have any thoughts or ideas you would like to share, please send them to Chuck Arning at chuck@inter800.com Volt Information Sciences is currently taking orders for the print version of the “Internet Tollfree National Directory”. ICANN was originally created as a result of a memorandum of understanding with the Commerce Department in 1998, which has been extended twice before. The Department of Commerce published its new Memorandum of Understanding with ICANN. This new agreement calls for improved accountability with the public, here is the exact wording. “Continue to develop, to test, and to implement accountability mechanisms to address claims by members of the Internet community that they have been adversely affected by decisions in conflict with ICANN's by-laws, contractual obligations, or otherwise treated unfairly in the context of ICANN processes.” This statement doesn't provide any detail about how ICANN should carry out this task. Karl Auerbach, an ICANN director and frequent critic of the organization's other leaders, had harsher words for the memo. "It gives ICANN another year of life and imposes virtually no meaningful obligations or restrictions on the corporation," he said. "It's sort of like Enron getting a pat on the head by the SEC and being told 'You are doing well, keep it up, we are dropping all limitations on your activities.'" Now that is an ICANN director, mind you. But another director, and President of ICANN, Stuart Lynn, said it "will allow ICANN to complete its ongoing reform processes." And I thought something had to be going on before it can be called ongoing. Steve Jackson saj@inter800.com Vegas Vacation has the best rates on Las Vegas Hotel Rooms.
