Tip Of The Week *01 ICANN Ordered to Open Books ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers) is the nonprofit organization that oversees technical issues related to the Internet's addressing system (domain names). This is not an insignificant responsibly; ICANN policies have a major impact on anyone that’s invested time and money developing a web site. The Board of ICANN is composed of nineteen Directors; five of the Directors were selected according to a vote of Internet users worldwide. These board members were designed to provide public representation to the board. Karl Auerbach one of the at-large directors elected by Internet users requested to see the corporate records in November 2000 and was granted access to them nine months later on the condition that he sign an agreement that left his ability to access and copy the works at ICANN's discretion. Auerbach refused to sign the document, saying that it set unacceptable limitations on his rights as a director. Auerbach filed suit with the Los Angeles Superior Court, asking for the right to see the documents. On Monday a California superior court ruled that ICANN must hand over corporate documents requested by Auerbach. ICANN can appeal the decision and the case could drag on throughout the remainder of Auerbach's term, which ends later this year. This could prevent him from ever examining the documents. In March of this year the President of ICANN (Stuart Lynn) proposed doing away with the elected board members and the ICANN board voted to approve the change. On December 15, 1995, Brushes by Karen at http://brushesbykaren.com was the first full-page advertiser, and she just renewed again a couple of weeks ago. We also obtained her domain for her and created her first web site and helped her create her newsletter, recently. Outside of the pride that gives us as a company, as it demonstrates our utility and value, it also gives us a certain amount of humility to realize that she could put up with us that long. It also shows that she must create good brushes, so please visit her site. Thanks, Karen Bock. Steve Jackson saj@inter800.com Vegas Vacation has the best rates on Las Vegas Hotel Rooms. Since we are constantly preaching about key words and meta tags and headers to anyone who listens, we quite often look at a customer's underlying HTML code on his home page to see what he is using as key words. For those of you who don't know how to do that, here's how. In Netscape, pull up a home page, click on "View" at the top left, then "Page Source". In IE, it's "View" then "Source". Now the tip: Since I copy the "meta name="keywords" content=" for use in our Enhanced Listings, I find that highlighting the text and then rolling the mouse left or right, sometimes either just doesn't work, or it's slow. If you highlight the beginning of the text and hold down the left-hand button, then you can simply use the left or right arrow pointers on your keyboard to navigate and copy the entire content. Obviously this works in Word too. By the way, if you try this on your own home page and do not see "meta" anywhere, with "key words", Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200, just call us IMMEDIATELY.
