*01 Use An Email Signature

Welcome to The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. This week I'm going to recommend a promotional tool that some of you are already using. That tool is an e-mail signature. The signature is just details about you or your company on the bottom of all your e-mails. This signature gives you a perfect opportunity to place a tagline on all your e-mail that can attract new visitors and reinforces your branding.

Based on the e-mail sent to me, about 50% of you are already using a signature when sending email. If you are not presently using a signature on your e-mail, you should! Almost all of the e-mail programs available today permit you to automatically attach your signature or virtual business card to all e-mail that you send. Setting up your signature file will take about 15 minutes and is well worth the effort.
If you use Outlook Express:
-1. Click Tools
-2. Click Options
-3. Select the "Signatures" Tab

If you Use Outlook
-1. Click Tools
-2. Click Options
-3. Click the "Mail Format" Tab

Keep your signature promotional message very brief and to the point. Outline your services and how they benefit your clients in fewer than ten words. This is a good place to use your slogan. The signature should also contain your name, company name, web site address, e-mail address and toll free number. You can also place information about a sale or upcoming event if it's brief. Remember don't use all caps, it's considered shouting and will offend some people.

*02 Important News about Online Advertising

In a recent study released by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers, just last week, it revealed that online advertising for the year 2001, overall, was down by 12%. That shouldn't surprise anyone, except those that thought it would be a bigger decrease. What was more revealing, however, if not surprising, was what online formats took the biggest decrease and what formats increased, and why.

Banner ads and sponsorships plummeted, which was no surprise within this office. We have been saying that for years as the general lack of response to those types of ads was obvious. Interstitials and e-mail stayed about the same. What went up? - KEY WORD PLACEMENTS and classifieds.

In an excellent analysis by Sean Carton, Chief Experience Officer at Carton Donofrio Partners, Inc., he states"

"What does this mean? Overall, the changes taking place (and accelerating, based on what I'm hearing) reflect a growing realization the best return on investment (ROI) and the most effective means of reaching people online take advantage of media that fit with the online experience. As I said last time, advertisers want measurable, direct results. They know the Net provides an answer to the age-old conundrum: "I know half my advertising isn't working, I just don't know which half." They're losing faith in transplanted models such as banners.

Study after study shows consumers are browsing less. They go online with a goal in mind. If they want to buy something, they head online to buy something. If they want to read the news, they log on and do just that. If they want to find something, they head to search engines and don't flail around hoping to luck into a solution. Goal-directed advertising models, such as classified ads and search engine buys, play into this behavior. They put the content people are seeking in front of them, rather than ask them to click away from an activity they're involved in to go down a path that diverges from their goal."

People searching in this manner don't know a name or they would just go to IBM.com, or whatever. But they do know that they want a computer, or a sweater and if your key word positioning is generally not on the first page, they will buy from someone else.
Since its inception in 1995, the Internet 800 Directory has used the key word placement model, which is now starting to be validated. These new reports suggest that you should too.

Tip of the Week

Creation of Folders

There are still many people that never learned how to use Windows Explorer as a File cabinet for their files and documents. It's easy. First, open Windows Explorer. If you want to create a new folder on your hard drive (generally "C"), click on the C drive, go to top left "File", click on "New" on the drop-down, click on "Folder", then type in the name of the new folder when it comes up.

If you want to create a new Folder as a sub-folder of another, such as a customer name in your "Customer" folder, open that folder, then repeat the process above and it will be created under that folder instead of under "C" as a separate heading.
