Two weeks ago, I told you of a vote that was coming on Ultra-Wide Band. On February 14, 2002 the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to unanimously approve the limited use of Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology for handheld wireless communications, ground penetrating radar and vehicle collision avoidance systems. The FCC approved the UWB technology but limited its range to above 3.1 gigahertz. They also restricted its use in some cases to law enforcement, scientific researchers and certain other industries. Sometime in the next year, the FCC said it will conduct testing and monitoring of the standards for UWB products that come to market to ensure there isn't any interference and will issue a further notice of proposed rulemaking to explore more flexible standards.
