New Year, New Virus 02. Google Catalog Search *01 New Year, New Virus Over the last year, thousands of people have sent me e-mail contaminated with a virus. When I receive one of these contaminated pieces of email, it means someone’s machine has been infected. Most of last year's viruses caused more embarrassment than actual damage to the infected computers. That statement is not true for the first new virus of 2002, W32.Maldal.D@mm. When this virus infects your machine, it deletes antivirus software and all files with the extensions: ini, php, exe, com, mpeg, dat, zip, txt, exe, xls, doc, and jpg. Deleting these files will make your computer unusable. You will have to reinstall your operating system and all your programs before you can use your machine again. You will also lose all unbacked up Word and Excel files saved on your machine. This virus spreads by sending email messages to everyone in your address book. The virus gets your computer name and uses it in the subject line. The attachment that is sent with the message is an .exe file. The name used for this attached file is composed of your computer name plus the .exe extension (example--Johns PC.exe). If the virus is run a second time, it will use “ZaCker" and an attachment named ZaCker.exe for the e-mail it sends. The good news is, I have only received three e-mail infected with this virus since the first of the year. The bad news is, the three people who sent me those e-mails had their computers severely damaged. Remember, don't open an attachment if you didn't ask for it to be sent to you. If you receive an unsolicited attachment, call the person and ask why and what they sent you. If you don't know the person that sent it, delete it. Last, check all attachments with your virus software before opening, but remember, virus software cannot detect a virus that it is unaware of. Update your virus software regularly to be sure it has all the latest information regarding current viruses. Well, I was recently made aware of a new service about to be launched by Google, one of the most popular and successful search engines, and I would like to share it with all of you. Google is currently Beta testing a new service that will allow consumers to search and browse mail-order catalogs online. If your business has a printed catalog, you may send it to Google and their people will scan in the pages of your catalog and add them to their searchable database. Currently, there is NO CHARGE for this service. This may change, so I strongly recommend acting quickly. >From Google's web site: "Inclusion in Google Catalog Search is currently free for publishers. There is no obligation and nothing you need to do other than provide Google with copies of your catalogs. Google's enormous user base performs more than 150 million searches a day, so your catalog will be seen by customers it would take millions of dollars and years to find through traditional means. And remember that these users are actively looking for the products you sell." If you're wondering how Google intends to make money from this service, I give you this from their site: "Google is developing additional elements to the program that will allow us to work with your company in several ways to boost catalog sales. Some of these include: Reporting information. What are the keywords users enter to find your catalog? How many pages do they typically examine? What kind of clickthrough rates and sellthrough do online catalogs generate? Google can provide you with information about how your customers use your catalog in ways no other research tool can, all the while adhering to the strictest standards of individual user privacy. Advertising. We are developing advertising programs to enhance your visibility within the Google Catalog Search pages. Look for details to be announced in the near future. Lead generation. We can provide you with the names and addresses of our users who have specifically requested that your catalog be mailed to them. Direct linking to your website's product pages. We will work with you to link products in the scanned catalogs to the same product on your web site, so users can order from you even more easily. We will also accept digital feeds of catalog content." Google already has several catalogs online. To see this service in action, visit: http://catalog.google.com. For more information about including your catalog within this database, click the "Info For Catalog Vendors" link. Last, Google's policy is not to host catalogs that focus on liquor, tobacco, firearms, or similar products.
