Goal Setting *01 Goal Setting With the New Year coming in a couple of days, this is a great time to sit down and set goals. Anytime you have done something really worthwhile, you were knowingly or sometimes unknowingly following through on a goal. Goals can keep you focused on a purpose and help you through difficult times when many others would give up. By knowing exactly what you want to accomplish, you know what to focus on and what is merely a distraction. Before you can achieve a worthwhile goal, you must build commitment. The first step to building commitment is to create a true desire to achieve the goal. Building goals around, “it would be nice” or “I might like to” will not work. Sit down and write out all the benefits and advantages of achieving your goal. Develop your desire by visualizing how you will feel and what your life will be like once you have accomplished your goal. Strong desire will create strong commitment. The second step towards building commitment is investment; the more you think about and plan your goal the more you’ve invested. There will be a direct relationship between your level of investment and your commitment. Write your goal down. When setting goals, you should think about: 1-Is this goal in line with my basic values? 2-What will I have to give up or reduce? 3-What areas will need to be increased or will require more effort? 4-What unwanted behavior, feelings or thoughts will need to be changed? 5-What are realistic daily goals and are they in agreement with the long-term goal? 6-How fast can you sensibly make these changes? 7-What areas will you need help and where can you go to get it? The last step to building commitment is ownership. Setting goals is the beginning of a self-change process and nothing is more personal. You can receive input from others but the goal must be yours and you must claim it as your own. Plan your activities and prioritize them. Set deadlines and build a system to measure your progress. Build a picture of the goal already complete. Play that picture over and over in your mind. Little is achieved without commitment. Goals provide the map to take us where we want to go.
