*01 Tauzin-Dingell Bill

It looks like the Tauzin-Dingell Bill (HR 1542) could be coming to the floor of the House for a vote in March. For those of us concerned about the Internet and it’s long term well-being, this is an issue of some interest.

This Bill eliminates the current FCC requirements that local exchange carriers provide access to their networks for competitive Internet services. Without access to local exchange carriers’ networks, it would be impossible for any company to create a competing DSL service. The passing of this Bill will mean that your only option for DSL will be your local exchange carrier.

The Association for Local Telecommunications says, “If passed, the legislation would effectively end competition for DSL and other high-speed data services, wipe out more than $50 billion in investment and eliminate 70,000 telecommunications and Internet jobs.”

The National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates (NASUCA) says, “Tauzin-Dingell will lead to rate hikes and is simply bad for consumers.”

Supporters of HR1542 suggest that the bill will increase choices and reduce prices for High-speed Internet access. I find it very unlikely that removing competition from the marketplace will accomplish either of these things.

*02 Holiday Message

I found this holiday message on the Army's web site. The Secretary of the Army, Togo D. West, Jr., and the Army Chief of Staff, General Dennis J. Reimer, originally wrote it five years ago. I think the words are perfect as is and would like to reiterate them here:

"As 1996 draws to a close, we extend our personal best wishes for this holiday season to all the women and men of America's Army. Thank you for your dedication, selfless service, and sacrifice in defending world freedom and peace.

For the peace and prosperity we enjoy today, we thank you -- you, our dedicated soldiers, Army civilians, and family members. Although many of you will not be able to spend this holiday season with your families, you have your Army family to ease the loneliness of separation.

Wherever you are, whatever your mission, take pride and satisfaction in knowing that you are securing a bright future for yourselves and future generations of Americans.

We wish you and those closest to you a safe and happy holiday and a new year filled with peace, joy, and love."

I would just like to add a THANK YOU from the entire staff of the Internet 800 Directory and our affiliated companies.
