*01 Another Virus

Welcome to The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. In the last two weeks over 300 readers of this newsletter have e-mailed the W32.Badtrans.B@mm virus to me. That means that at least 300 of you have been infected with the W32.Badtrans.B@mm virus.

If you are infected, when you connect to the Internet there is a 33% chance, the virus will search for email addresses from Outlook and Explorer files. If it finds e-mail addresses in these files, then it will send itself to those addresses using the your SMTP server. If this server is unavailable the virus will choose from a list of its own.

This virus remembers to whom it has sent e-mail and doesn’t send multiple emails to the same person. Additionally, the sender's email address will have the "_" character added to it. This makes replying to people infected with the virus a little harder. You must remove the added “_” when sending notice to someone that they are infected. Example: _chuck@inter800.com would need to changed to chuck@inter800.com

Besides spreading itself, this virus examines the currently open window once per second. It checks for a window title that contains any of the following as the first three characters: LOG (LOGon) - PAS (PASsword) – REM (REMote) – CON (CONnection) – TER (TERminal) – NET (NETwork)

If any of these words are found, then the key logging is enabled for 60 seconds. Every 30 seconds, the log file and the captured passwords are sent out by e-mail.

If you think you might have the virus, but are unsure you can search your computer for the file “Kdll.dll”, this is the program that logs and sends out the passwords.
1-Click the “Start” button on your task bar.
2-Click “Find” (select files or folders)
3-In the named box enter: Kdll.dll
4-Set “Look In” to your hard drive (the one that has windows on it)
5-Click “Find Now”

If your computer has this file, you have the virus and need to remove it. For instruction on removing the virus visit: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html

Remember, don't open an attachment if you didn't ask for it to be sent to you. If you receive an unsolicited attachment, call the person and ask why and what they sent you. If you don't know the person that sent it, delete it. Last, check all attachments with your virus software before opening.

*02 Domain Names

I would like to take this time to reiterate how important it is that you acquire your company's domain name as soon as possible. While I've discussed this before, it's been a while and we have quite a few new members that have joined since the last time I brought this subject up. If you already have a domain name, but think you may need another, you should probably keep reading this as well.

Even if you are not yet ready to create a web site, you should still acquire your domain name (ASAP). Domain names are being taken at an alarming rate and waiting will only decrease the chance of getting a suitable name. As it stands now, be prepared to have your first choice (or more) already taken by another entity. You can own a domain name and do nothing with it until you're ready. You would only need to pay the initial registration fees on the name until you decide to put up a site.

To help establish a sense of urgency, I'm going to make you an offer that I hope you can't refuse. For a limited time, we will acquire your domain name on your behalf and pay the InterNIC registration fees for 2 years for only $39. You or your company would own the name and no further charges would arise until either you're ready to put a site up or the initial two years ends. My reasons for doing this are two-fold. First, I don't want our readers stuck with stupid domain names because they waited too long to get the one they wanted. Second, we build and host web sites for businesses and I hope to eventually help you get your web site online (although if we help you acquire your domain name, you have no obligation to use any of our other services).

Whether you are currently looking for a company to help you with a web site or simply wish to stockpile some good domain names, you should call or email me about this offer immediately. If you'd like, you may send me the potential domain name(s) you desire and I'll check its availability.

Thanks for your time today. I hope to be hearing from you soon. George Paul 800-299-1879 (george@gotollfree.com)
