SUBJECT:Cyberwar

Welcome to The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. This week, Chinese hackers are attacking web sites in America. These attacks are in retaliation for the death of the Chinese pilot, who crashed after colliding with the US spy plane.

The Chinese hackers started their attacks on May 1 and will continue the assault through May 7, peaking today, May 4. The 4th is a Chinese holiday commemorating the country's first major student demonstrations in 1919.

This declaration by the Chinese hackers brought together a group of US hackers, calling themselves “Project China”. This group is attacking web sites based in China. To my knowledge, this is the first time hackers from two opposing nations waged Cyberwar over political events. As this Cyberwar is waged, it is important that all webmasters and network administrators ensure their networks are protected.

At last count, over 400 sites were affected. If you have any direct knowledge of a site becoming a casualty to this conflict I would love to hear about it.

I will be on the road again this week, so I may be slow to respond to your e-mail but, if you have any thoughts on this subject or any ideas that could be helpful to the others in this group, send them to me (Chuck Arning) at chuck@inter800.com
