Newsletter ArchiveSUBJECT:Virus Generator Welcome to The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. This is the last time for a while that I'm going to write about e-mail viruses. The reason I can't seem to let it go is, some of you out there are still getting infected and this problem is only getting worse. There is a program being distributed on the Internet call the Visual Basic (VBS) worm generator v2.0. This program is an upgrade of the program that was used to create the Anna Kournikova virus last month. This upgraded program will help individuals create better and more destructive viruses. The new program has the ability to create a virus that can change itself using a 10-digit random number. This means, that as the virus disseminates, it changes its appearance. This new feature makes it much harder for anti-virus software to detect and protect your machine. The new version will also help the programmer create a virus that will search out network devices on the infected machine, making it easier to spread. Visual Basic (VBS) worm generator v2.0 makes it easy for people with limited programming ability to create a harmful virus. Right now it is available for download on web pages and newsgroups to anyone in the world. This creates a potential for new e-mail viruses to be created and spread to more people than ever before. Please understand, as an individual, these types of viruses don't cause me a problem. I'm careful when I receive attachments, so these types of viruses are something I simply delete when I receive them. The problem is, every time I receive one, I know that someone I know or do business with has just been hurt. This type of occurrence doesn't just affect the person's computer. It also undermines their confidence in the Internet as a place to communicate and do business. If we all help inform the general public about this danger, it can only help decrease its negative influence.
