SUBJECT:E-Mail Virus

Welcome to The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. Early this week, I read a story about a new exploit of e-mail that was sent using the html format. Using this system, a person can send someone e-mail and then capture all the e-mail addresses of anyone he or she forwarded that message to. Also, that person would also be able to read whatever was added to the message. For this exploit to work, the receipient must be using Outlook, Outlook Express, or Netscape 6, programs most of you are reading this newsletter with right now.

Over the years I have conducted business negotiations, exchanged contracts, and commented to business associates on matters that I would not want shared. I have done this, because sitting alone at the computer, commutating with others, always seems to be personal and private. This new exploit should help remind us all that e-mail is NOT private; anything you send in e-mail could be read by anyone at anytime. The only way to insure that your e-mail commutations are secure is by encryption (something most of us don't use often enough).

Fortunately this new predicament can easily be corrected by turning off Java scripts in you e-mail browser. For more details about this exploit visit http://www.privacyfoundation.org/advisories/advemailwiretap.html

Remember, in today's competitive environment, many individuals will use any tool available to them to gain an advantage. Unfortunately, snooping on e-mail is one of the simplest. Please don't misinterpret my point. You should use e-mail to communicate. Just remember, if you wouldn't read your e-mail out loud in a crowded room, then you should think about using encryption or another medium.
