Newsletter ArchiveSUBJECT: Domain Name Control Welcome to The Internet 800 Directory Newsletter. I hope that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and enjoyed their holidays. This week I want to cover an issue that all of those with a domain name should become more informed about. Who controls the domain names? Now that the Internet has become a major part of most companies' marketing plan and their domain name their distinctive focal point. We should all become more informed as to who is making decisions that can affect our company's income. The group that oversees domain names is called the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). According to its website, ICANN was created as a way to comply with the Clinton administration's 1997 Framework for Global Electronic Commerce. Under this outline, the Department of Commerce was directed to privatize the domain-name system. In June of 1998, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) outlined a nonprofit, worldwide corporation formed by private sector Internet business enterprises to administer policy for the DNS. ICANN was established by the Internet Assigned Names Authority (lANA) and Network Solutions (NSI) on September 30, 1998. Its mission was then formally defined by a memorandum of understanding with the Commerce Department in November 1998. The Board of ICANN is composed of nineteen Directors: nine At-Large Directors, nine selected by ICANN's three supporting organizations and the President/CEO (ex officio). Those organizations are Address Supporting Organization (ASO), Domain Name Supporting Organizatio (DNSO) and Protocol Supporting Organization (PSO). Five of the current At-Large Directors were selected according to a vote of Internet users worldwide. There is unending controversy surrounding the origins and governance practices of ICANN, chronicled here weekly via ICB Toll Free News, below.
